Even after fifteen years of homeschooling, I still find there’s something stirring about a brand new school year.
The freshly sharpened pencils, boxes of books yet unopened, and stacks of uncreased lined paper kindof make me want to swoon. Neatly arranged shelves? Sheer bliss. Open the doors of the exhibit hall at a convention? I hear the Hallelujah Chorus.
A blank planning calendar? Not so much.
Just looking at all those empty boxes and lines waiting to be filled in makes me kindof weak in the knees. And not in a good way.
Can I be really honest here? A few years ago, we’d had a tough time of our homeschool year. By spring I was declaring formal education over, because I just didn’t feel like I could slug through what felt remarkably like cold, dark molasses … uphill … for one more day. When summer really rolled around I threw a party, and determined not to think about school again until August.
Then August 1st arrived. Since we were part of an umbrella school at the time and were required to work a certain number of days each year, I knew I needed to pull it together, and fast. I sat down with one of those scary blank calendars, and counted the days left before Thanksgiving (we like to take a break for the entire Christmas season). There were 23 of them. And right there on my couch, the idea for this book was born.
I prayed. I made lists. I compared pros and cons. I opened cabinets and sorted curriculum and prayed some more. I talked to my kids and dreamed a bit with my husband and talked philosophy with some friends. And I wrote it all down so I wouldn’t forget or lose any of it. I’ve used the exact same list every year since.
Now, I’ve got it all revised and prettied up and formatted in several options—and today it’s finally ready to share with you!
